Exploring the Exciting Possibilities of NDIS SIL and SDA
We wanted to share some exciting updates from our recent Apoio Connect NDIS networking event! Tim and Andrew from Macleay Valley Support Services took the stage and provided us with a captivating overview of SIL (supported independent living) and the latest developments they are involved in. It was an enlightening session that shed light on the immense value of SIL and its transformative effects on individuals' lives.
So, this Pulse we want to dive into the world of NDIS SIL and NDIS SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation). SIL funding aims to empower individuals with disabilities to live independently, while SDA funding focuses on specialized housing solutions for those with significant functional impairment or high support needs. These support categories play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for participants with 24-hour care and fostering inclusivity in our communities.
However, we now face an intriguing situation within Australia. With the recent surge in housing developments, there has been an emergence of surplus houses, causing a shift in the balance between SIL vacancies and participants. Previously, the ratio stood at 0.8 SIL vacancies to participants, indicating a relatively balanced scenario. However, it has now ballooned to approximately 3.5 SIL vacancies to participants, revealing a significant increase.
According to the NDIS quarterly report released on 31st March 2023, there has been a remarkable increase in the number of SIL participants. Since June 2022, the NDIS has welcomed 4,418 new SIL participants! While this surge reflects the growing demand for SIL support, it does not align with the surge of houses being built and vacancies within SDA/SIL houses. These statistics highlight the significance of addressing the emerging surplus of SIL vacancies and ensuring that participants receive the assistance they require.
This development prompts thought-provoking questions about the future. How will this surplus of SIL vacancies impact the availability and distribution of support for individuals? Can the NDIS respond by significantly increasing processing of SIL packages to ensure that participants receive the assistance they need? Are there other innovative NDIS options that can be utilised to address this challenge effectively?
