Embracing New Possibilities: Supporting Participants' Unique Choices!
Greetings from Apoio! This week we had an intriguing conversation with an NDIA Planner that got us thinking about participant preferences and our collective role in supporting them.
Our Support Coordinator, Krissy, discussed what happens when a participant has the desire to claim outside of the NDIS guidelines. This led us to consider how we can assist the NDIS community in helping participants make better informed decisions that align with their individual needs.
Consider these examples that came up:
- professional manicures,
- short-term accommodation for independent living,
- gym or pool memberships,
- home exercise equipment,
- SMART home products, and
- trampolines for physical well-being.
While these examples are generally not funded within NDIS guidelines, it highlights the importance of open, honest, and transparent discussions between participants, providers and the NDIS regarding spending options. Our role is to encourage compliant use of funds and foster open communication between all the NDIS community, especially with NDIS Local Area Coordinators and Planners.
During the plan review, exceptional items can be assessed individually. By building strong relationships with coordinators and planners, we ensure all possibilities are explored. If certain items are declined, the NDIS provides transparent explanations.
As part of the NDIS community, we need to empower participants by offering accurate information and setting realistic expectations. This enables them to make informed decisions aligning with their NDIS goals and complying with guidelines.
