The NDIS Yes and No lists have sparked a lot of conversations lately, but what happens if something on the No list is recommended for a participant? Enter replacement supports! Here’s a quick guide to help you navigate this process like a pro.
What Are Replacement Supports?
Replacement supports are like NDIS-approved “swaps.” If an existing support in a participant’s plan isn’t quite meeting their needs, a replacement support can take its place. The catch? It has to:
• Replace an existing NDIS support in the plan.
• Help as much or more than the original support.
• Cost the same or less than what it’s replacing.
Could This Be a Replacement Support?
Replacement supports aren’t a free-for-all. They must be standard, commercially available items that meet the participant’s disability support needs. Think practical, functional, and aligned with NDIS goals. If it fits these criteria, it might make the cut – but only after going through the proper approval process.
The Process: Getting Approval
If a participant or therapist recommends something on the No list, don’t worry. The NDIA now allows participants to use the Replacement Supports Form to justify the request. This form provides the green light for plan managers to approve the swap – but only if the NDIA planner or LAC agrees it’s a good fit.
